The iPad is a highly portable tablet computer designed for web access, email, music, movies and other multimedia applications, falling somewhere between a laptop and a smartphone. It shares many of the features of the iPhone and iPod Touch but with a much larger display. Like the iPod and iPhone, it only runs applications downloaded from Apple's App Store but it does come with a full featured web browser (Safari) and email program and a selection of utilities that enable it to fulfil most people's needs straight out of the box.

Something to be aware of when buying an iPad: There are four different generations of iPad - the original iPad 1, iPad 2, iPad 3 and the latest iPad 4 and they are often all referred to as just 'iPad' so make sure you know which version you are buying! All four look very similar but the iPad 4 has the new 8 pin Lightning Dock connector instead of the old 30 pin connector. The iPad 1 had no camera whereas iPad 2 and iPad 3 both have front & rear cameras and look almost identical. iPad 4 has a better front-facing camera than the iPad 3 (1.2MP instead of 0.3MP) for better video chatting and also has a faster processor.
There are many places you can buy an iPad - the leading internet retailers such as Amazon and eBay are often hard to beat but also an ever increasing number of high street retailers such as John Lewis, Sainsburys, Dixons and Best Buy also sell the iPad as well as specialist resellers such as PC World & MacWarehouse and even mobile networks such as Vodafone. We have put together an iPad price comparison page checking prices from all these sources to find the best deals for you.
Secondhand can be an attractive option, saving you the initial depreciation that happens as soon as you open the box, and if you buy a fairly new secondhand one, all the manufacturer's warranty will still be in place so you will be fully covered in the event of any faults. If you're prepared to go slightly older, you can often pick up some real bargains with last year's model going for a fraction of it's original price. eBay is of course one of the best places to find secondhand iPad bargains and we have created a page that searches eBay for you to find the best deals on secondhand iPads for sale. Our unique filtering system trawls through the eBay database selecting only the most relevant offers and best deals to save you time.
